Major Issues/ Problems

  • The out lying areas of the zone forms on low lying areas, need landfill for development.
  • The industrial estates creates by RAJUK and BSCIC not fully uses and have a substantial number of vacant plots.
  • The spontaneous areas serve by a poorly developed road network and inadequate utility services.
  • There is a housing need for the industrial workers who mostly squat on available unoccupied land.

Opportunity

  • The area has a fair number of non-utilized industrial plots for the promotion of industries.
  • DPHE has undertaken a project to supply piped water in Tongi urban areas.
  • FAP-8A identifies Tongi in its schemes to protect Dhaka from external flooding. The area deserves potential for vertical expansion.
  • DITS proposes a railway upgrading feasibility study. If realizes, it may provide the area with a mass transportation system.
  • The area is within commuting distance from the main CBD of Dhaka.
