Definition of Urban Market

The term hat and bazar considers as a business place where ‘business’ includes any trade, commerce or manufacture or any adventure in the nature of trade, commerce or manufacture or any profession or vocation. But does not include a profession carried on by an individual or by individuals in partnership if the profits of the profession depends wholly or mainly on his or their personal qualifications unless such profession consists wholly or mainly in the making of contracts on behalf of other persons or the giving to other persons of advice of a commercial nature in connection with the making of contracts.

Generally, the term hat and bazar uses for rural areas and market for urban areas. Therefore, a sharp difference shows among the hat / bazar and market. Those differences not exists in the contemporary regulatory arrangements in the country.  The term ‘market’ means a place where persons assemble for the sale and purchase of meat, fish, fruit, vegetable, or any other article of food or for the sale and purchase of livestock or animals and includes any place which notifies as a market in accordance with the rules.

Type of market

Among all the urban facilities deliver by the government and public authorities, market facilities consider as the second foremost important factor. The local authorities control establishment and management of the market places in urban and rural areas. But, in the divisional town of Bangladesh the scenario particularly different. Except local authority, some other authorities are also involved with the enforcement of regulations on the urban market.

According to the locational concept, two type of markets in Bangladesh exists, named urban market and rural market. Rural market further sub-divides into three parts such as daily market, weekly market and weekly hat. Urban market preserves different commercial activities than rural market. Variety of the urban market stands according to the place, time, activities and structural condition. In regulatory arrangement, regulation has framed on the term ‘hat and bazar’ and ‘market’.
