Juba sits in a strategically important region, on the bank of the Nile near the borders of Congo, Uganda and Kenya.
Juba’s location and the presence of active air and river ports make it an important trade hub which in turn facilitates the fast growth of the city.
The Juba assessment of 2005 related to town planning and administration conducts to assess the existing situation of town planning in Juba as well as exploring the future strategies of town planning in the region.
There are three key factors contribute to the rapid transition of Juba. These factors create pressure on the urban management of Juba, as well as the urban and rural lands and regional resources.
GOSS LOCATION TO JUBA: As the seat of the new government, Juba will be host to political leadership, public servants, military personnel and their families. Local and international agencies will follow. The estimated number of people moving in is more than 5000.
MIGRATION FLOWS: With the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement,UNHCR estimates that approximately 60,000 returnees who fled to neighboring countries during war including refugees and IDPs could resettle in Juba and surrounding areas.
