Age-sex structure

In the Pourashava, 54% male and 46% female population. About 42.4% population of the Patharghata Paurashava falls within the age-group 26–57 years. Again, 20.1% in 16–25 years and 25.7% in 6–15 years. Economically active population within the age-group 26–57 years are prominent. As like, 39.6% male within the age-group 26–57 years follow 24.6% in 6–15 years of living. It signifies economically active population within the age-group 26–57 years. Furthermore, 45.1% female within the age-group 26–57 years follow by 26.8% within 6-15 years.  This also illustrates economically active female population within the age-group 26–57 years.

Household size

Household size ranges from 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12 and 12+ members, but most prevalent size is 4-6 members in the Pourashava and also in Bangladesh. Both, single and joint family system prevails in the Pourashava. Lowest number of average family size is 3.4 and 3.5. Those families are living in the Ward No. 1 and 8 respectively. A good number of 4 members in a family lives in the Ward No. 2, 3, 6 and 9. Single or nuclear family is the prominent family size in the Pourashava, confirming the urban character. Nuclear family is highest in the Ward No. 1 (78%) and lowest in the Ward No. 6 (16%).

Migration

In the Pourashava, 16% household comes from other places. About half (50%) of the household came after the year 2000 means the migration phenomenon is of recent. Again, 36.8% and 13.2% migrates during the year 1980-1990 and 1990-2000 respectively. The migrated people are living in all the Wards.  Most common reason of the in-migration is the seeking of business and job. It shows that 65.8% household migrates for business purpose and 32.9% for job. Other reason of in-migration is for better educational facility.

Educational status

The literacy rate (58.20%) of Patharghata Pourashava is quite high with compared to Barguna Zila and National level for both male and female. In educational status, about 19.81% people are between Classes VI to X, 18.65% Classes I-V, 12.64% SSC and 9.59% are HSC level of education. In total, 32.14% people are illiterate.

Most of of the households’ heads (31.63%) are illiterate, 20.4% passed SSC, 17.3% HSC and 14.7% Classes VI-X. From the socio-economic survey it appears that 38.1% people living in Ward No. 2 are illiterate followed by 36% in Ward No. 6 and 34.5% in Ward No. 1. About 0.9% and 0.8% people living in Ward No. 1 and 3 are completed graduation respectively. Literacy rate is high in the Ward No. 4 and lowest in the Ward No. 1.
