Location and Form of the Patharghata Pourashava

The Patharghata Pourashava forms in the year 1996 under the jurisdiction of Patharghata Upazila of Barguna Zila. The Pourashava lies between 21°58 and 22°14 north latitudes and between 89°53 and 90°05 east longitudes. Among five Upazilas of Barguna Zila, Patharghata Upazila ranks 3rd position according to the area and population. The Pourashava is bounded on the north by Bamna Upazila, on the east by Barguna Sadar Upazila. Again, Bay of Bengal presents on the south and Sarankhola Upazila of Bagerhat Zila and Mathbaria Upazila of Pirojpur Zila on the west.

Origin

Patharghata the largest Upazila of Barguna Zila in respect of area and population existences in 1925 as Thana and updates as an Upazila in 1983. Nothing definitely circulates about the origin of the Upazila name but legends that once Khan Jhana Ali rests in one of the river ghats at Patharghata and later he constructs the Sat Gombuj mosques at Bagerhat. The Patharghata area uses as transitional ghat for caring stones (in Bengali called ‘Pathar’) from Chittagong and Bagerhat.

Physiographically, Patharghata Pourashava seems similar as other Pourashavas (who stays on low-floodplain land) in Bangladesh. Except some areas of Ward No. 1, 3, 7 and 8, other areas cover by vast track of agriculture land including spotted water bodies. The Biskhali River flows on the eastern boundary line from north to south of the Pourashava. In the Pourashava, Ward No. 1 and 7 are developed than other Wards.

Map of Patharghata Pourashava, Proposed Services for Ward No. 9 focuses on proposed urban services and their locations. This is a component of Patharghata Pourashava Master Plan.
