The Pourashava is located at southern part of Bangladesh and about 170 km. (through Maowa) away from the Dhaka City. Bakerganj, the second largest Upazila of Barisal District in respect of population, existences in 1874. Nothing circulates about the origin of name of the Upazila. But, during the reign of Nawab Alibardi Khan an influential Zamindar named Aga Baker resides in this area and developed a market there.
