Khulna City stands on the southwestern part of Bangladesh. Once it was an industrial city, surrounds by Rupsha and Bhariab Rivers on the northeastern part and Beel Dakatia on the southwestern part. The city shapes linear and about 65% land owned by the government.

With the rapid increase of population, public sector like Khulna Development Authority and National Housing Authority forms planned residential areas.

Two neighbourhoods of Khulna city forms on industrial workers (housing for low-income people), formed by the NHA.

Nirala, Sonadanga and Mujgunni neighbourhoods for middle-income group, established by the KDA.
