EVOLUTION OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT INSTITUTION IN UNDIVIDED BENGAL: Special reference on the urban local government of East Bengal
Rich pre-historic determinants on the origin of local government evolves in the Bengal. From the year of 1948, the then Bengal segments into two parts named East Bengal and West Bengal. East Bengal somewhere identifies as East Pakistan up to the year of 1971 and after liberation as Bangladesh. The concept of local government derives from the end of 17th century in a written form. Before 17th century, any evidence not available on the local government system. Therefore, the study considers only the written documents.
The study exclusively considers origin and trend of changing character of the local government system in undivided Bengal. A wide range of study on the local government of East Bengal in those times emphasizes here. A time frame considers due to the necessity of the study. Bengal was divided in the year 1948 and from the year of 1793 to 1948 most of the local government system introduces. Based on those concepts, local government system develops further. Therefore the study rounds on those years.
