The Bakerganj Pourashava forms in the year 1997 under the jurisdiction of Bakerganj Upazila of Barisal Zila. It lies between 22027 and 22040 north latitudes and 90012 and 90003 east longitudes. The Pourashava is bounded on the north by Barisal sadar, on the east by Bhola sadar, on the south by Patuakhali sadar and on the west by Nalchity Upazila.

The Pourashava categorizes as ‘Ga’ (the term ‘Ga’ is the Bengali word means second category or ‘C’ category). Concerned Ministry uses this word for fund allocation and administrative purposes. It consists with 9 Wards and 5 mouzas and stands on southern part of Bangladesh, about 170 km. (through Maowa) away from the Dhaka City.

Bakerganj, the second largest Upazila of Barisal District in respect of population, existences in 1874. Nothing circulates about the origin of name of the Upazila. But, during the reign of Nawab Alibardi Khan an influential Zamindar named Aga Baker resides in this area and developed a market there. The Upazila derive its name as Bakerganj after the name of Aga Baker.
