The physiography of Khulna region broadly characterizes by the Ganges-tidal floodplain. It has lower relief and crisscrossed by large number of tidal rivers and channels. The formation about flat and the surface drains poorly. Khulna City forms on natural levee of Bhairab and Rupsha Rivers. The landscape of city and its environs composes natural levee, floodplain, old meander complex, bar, tidal marsh and back swamps. Natural levee is well developed along the Bhairab-Rupsha rivers bank (mostly on the west bank) and occupies by the present built-up area of the city.

Apart from the topographic conditions the city covers following natural peculiarities:

  • Khulna City deserves a unique linear shape, extends from southeast to northwest along the Bhairab-Rupsha Rivers. Subsequently, railway line and Khulna-Jessore Road played a dominant role in shaping the city linear.
  • Khulna City experiences high impact of salinity in its surface and ground water. This poses a problem because of a saline natural environment around the city.
  • The city is almost free from natural disasters like flood, cyclone and earthquake. Both, frequency and intensity of disasters prove low in Khulna.
