Number of road accidents or fatalities in Bangladesh considers highest in the world. Number and, growth rate of motorized vehicles in the country increases rapidly. No rationale exists why the number of people dies in road accident on the spot. It increases by 150% from 1,653 in 1995 to 4,046 in 2000. Actual number of death is higher, since many accidents not reports. No systematic follow-up record produces the number of grievously injured people who succumbed to death at a later stage. A study conducted by Accident Research Centre (ARC) of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) estimates the current number of accidental deaths at 10,000 to 12,000, which costs the nation Tk. 40,000 million per year, i.e. 2% of GDP.
According to ARC, 90% of all road accident causes by the three reasons i.e.
– Reckless driving;
– Road unworthy vehicles;
– Over loading Drug addiction of drivers;
The ARC study further identifies that the heavy vehicles, namely, buses, mini buses and trucks, constitute only 4% of all the motorized vehicles, cause 90% of the road accidents. Number of people died in road accidents increases by 150% in six years.
