Bangladesh, being located in the delta of three large rivers named Padma, Meghna and Jamuna. They features with an extensive network of river branches. Bridges and ferries form an essential part of the road system network in terms of connectivity. Where no bridge or ferry, physical accessibility not-existent. Bridges and ferries constitute a key factor in the level of service on the roads. Their numbers demonstrates economic and strategic importance, particularly high in relation to the length of the network.

Distribution of bridge over the primary road network is 8.18 m/km, proves pretty high. RHD  charges to build, maintain and own all the bridges of length less than 1 Km. Bridges of higher than 1 Km length comes under the jurisdiction of newly formed Bangladesh Bridge Authority (formerly known as Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge Authority). RHD charges to maintain all the information including location, type, physical features and structural condition in its database.
