Age-sex structure

Age and gender distribution indicates, population mostly increase naturally in the Tungipara. The age-sex distribution implies that female population is less than male population. In all the Wards number of males are greater than the number of females. Highest population goes under the range of years 18 to 34 age group. So, in all the Wards number of young and workable population is highest than any other aged-group population.

Household size

Family size ranges from 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12 and 12+ members, most prevalent size is 4-6 members. Single and joint family systems available in the Pourashava. Ward No. 5 deserves highest percent of 4-6 member family and Ward No. 7 joint-family system (43%). Most of the family in the Pourashava is single family (73%).

Migration

The Pourashava forms with permanent settlers (96.7%). All the people lives in Pourashava more than 14 years. A minimum percent (3.3%) of people lives during 10-14 years and is found in the Ward No. 1 and 9. Migration status of the Pourashava is stable because only 2% resident migrates and they are found in the Ward No. 1 (14%).

Educational status

There are small numbers of illiterate household heads (9.1% in Ward No. 6 and 20% in Ward No. 9). Except those two Wards, no illiterate population in other Wards. Reading between Classes-I to V found highest educational achievement in the Pourashava (55%). SSC level (18.3%) of population quite higher than HSC (5%) and Graduate (1.7%). A substantial percent of population holds secondary level (16.7%) of educational qualification. No master degree holder population presents in the Tungipara.

Primary occupation

About 45% households engage in business. Significant number of household engages as shopkeepers and traders, while 19% as office workers both government and semi-government including employees in private offices. The unskilled labour like rickshaw and van pullers accounts 7% of the total occupation group. Agriculture with farming belongs second major occupation (23%). Primary occupation ranges from government officer, government employee, teachers, farmers, small business, labour (skilled and unskilled) and housewives.

Income level

About 19% household’s source of income is service followed by 23% agriculture, 45% small business, 2% house rent and rest by other activities. Most of the Pourashava dwellers depend on small business and some development takes place because of government establishments. Agriculture as a source of income obtains low percentage. In Ward No. 3, 6, 8 and 9, business is the highest source of income and house rent is found only in Ward No. 2 (20%). Therefore, Tungipara as a small Pourashava deserves great potentiality to develop small industry which will facilitate small business and create a better employment opportunity.
