Since 1971, very little was added except for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the transport infrastructure damages during the liberation war. By end of this decade, the long sustained status-quo in the sector starts break to bring-in a change in the structure of the system. Prior to independence, no national or regional highways exists. Few roads connect Dhaka with the rest of the country. Extensive network of natural waterways provide alternative mode of inland water transport (IWT) covers almost the whole country. Railway route network of about 2,900 km. links 17 districts out of the then 19 districts supports the waterway.

Growth of the road sub-sector has been phenomenal. Prior to independence in 1971, there were hardly any rural roads. In the last fifteen years or so, a huge network of rural road constructs. For example, the Upazila road network increases by more than 57% to 111,160 km and village roads by 54% to 171,282 km over the past four years. A large majority of such constructs follow an unplanned way, often driven by non-economic and local issues.
