Urban renewal is new concept in the field of urban development in Bangladesh (in the year 1983). It refers to improve blight urban environments through public initiative and assistance in demolishing slums, rehabilitating or conserving existing structures and providing better housing. Also provides commercial, industrial and public buildings, as well as greater amenities pursuant to comprehensive plans and workable Programs. Urban renewal program usually takes in old and crowded areas that transforms into blighted areas.

Dhaka, the largest and the fastest growing metropolis of the country. During last 30 years population of the city multiplies by above 600 percent. This historical middle-age city grows over the centuries in an unplanned and haphazard way. The city grows with new dimensions from mid fifties but its large old areas remain with its over crowding narrow roads, congested dwellings, incompatible land uses, smoke, fume and lack of utility services. The problems face by old area population warrants over the time. No development program undertakes to ameliorate these problems although large number of planned development projects implements in new part of the city.

The study seems a unique experiment in the field of urban renewal in Bangladesh. The success of the experiment will open up a new horizon in planned and improvement of old and blighted areas. It will pave the way to plan urban development with due public participation.

The study presents just a preliminary proposal. The study through its different chapters describes background and objects and a brief description of the present condition of the study area, proposals and programs for renewal cost implications and social and economic benefits to be derived.
